The Dresden Kapellmeister Johann David Heinichen (1683–1729) is one of the most important composers of his era. His sonatas, concertos, cantatas, and masses represent a cosmopolitan synthesis of traditional, polyphonic structures and the modern galant style. Heinichen is particularly renowned as a music theorist: his treatise “Der Generalbass in der Composition” (1728) is considered a monumental standard work of its time. Recent research findings also show that Heinichen’s theoretical writings had a direct influence on the work of Johann Sebastian Bach. To mark the 300th anniversary of the publication in 2028, the Chair of Music Theory is launching a project to explore Heinichen’s significance and raise broader awareness of his work. This will include a conference at the Hansa Carré, a workshop on historical performance practice and analysis in collaboration with the Baroque Academy Dortmund and the Center for Early Music Cologne (zamus), as well as a concert featuring the TUD Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Choir at Reinoldikirche in downtown Dortmund on October 21, 22, and 23 October 2027.
