John Dowland: “Flow my….” Historical and Contemporary Performance Contexts and Arrangement Practices

Concert and workshop program marking the 400th anniversary of John Dowland’s death, organized by the Department of Historical Musicology at TU Dortmund University

John Dowland’s music has inspired more than just the musician Sting, who released a successful Dowland album in 2006. To this day, the Renaissance composer’s melancholic lute songs remain hugely popular. To mark the 400th anniversary of his death, the Department of Historical Musicology at TU Dortmund University is organizing a concert and workshop program that explores historical and contemporary performance contexts and arrangement practices for this music.

The two internationally renowned lutenists, Cornelia Demmer (Vienna) and Emma-Lisa Roux (Paris), will kick off the series on June 11 with a concert in which they will also perform as singers. They will bring the golden age of the lute song to life with works by Dowland and his contemporaries. On June 12, the two artists will lead a workshop. Lute maker Thorsten Sven Lietz will present his instruments, built according to historical models. The event will conclude with a workshop concert in which students will present the interpretations they developed during the workshop.
