About the Recording Studio
The TU Dortmund University recording studio offers students at the Institute of Music and Musicology the opportunity to gain important knowledge in music production. In addition, they can carry out their own creative projects—either on their own or in collaboration with the studio staff—or have recordings produced.
Seminars are held regularly in the recording studio. Here, students can acquire basic skills in using software such as Cubase, experiment with the creative use of virtual instruments, or learn the theoretical and practical fundamentals of the entire analog and digital signal flow in the recording studio and at live concerts, as well as recording, mixing, and mastering.
In addition, the recording studio staff organize an annual project week during which, over the course of several days, various projects—some of which build on one another—related to the topic of sound are carried out and explored (e.g., “How can I record a school choir?” or “How do I build my own synthesizer?”).
Students have the opportunity to produce their own music (or, if applicable, videos) here or have it produced for them; borrow equipment and instruments for their own projects; seek technical or purchasing advice; request technical support for events; carry out repairs or have them done; and network with one another.
The productions carried out in the recording studio in the past reflect the wide range of musical diversity at the Institute of Music and Musicology: Whether it’s German singer-songwriter pop productions like those by Mandy Lee Rose, melodic folk rock by Tuphead, big band and swing classics by the TU Dortmund University Jazz Ensemble, a cappella, or reggae, funk, soul, and indie rock by bands made up of students or staff members, or by solo artists—(almost) anything is possible in the FK16 recording studio!
The recording studio’s services are intended for students and faculty. Its primary focus is on teaching and research; therefore, unfortunately, no internships in sound engineering can be offered here.
