Conductor Julian Pontus Schirmer, a native of Wiesbaden, has been University Music Director at TU Dortmund University since fall 2022. Guest engagements have taken him to the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, and the Philharmonie Baden-Baden. As a violinist and violist, Julian Pontus Schirmer played in the German National Youth Orchestra, among other ensembles. He studied musicology in Berlin and orchestral conducting in the class of Prof. Gunter Kahlert, Prof. Nicolás Pasquet, and Prof. Ekhart Wycik in Weimar. He directed opera productions in Weimar and at the Junge Oper Rhein-Main. While still a student, he was hired as second conductor at the Theater Heidelberg. Julian Pontus Schirmer is a multiple prize winner of the “Jugend Musiziert” competition and was a scholarship recipient of the Carl Hempel Foundation, the German National Academic Foundation’s “Deutschlandstipendium,” and the “Musiktheater heute” Academy of the Deutsche Bank Foundation.
