Erasmus+ at the Institute for Music and Musicology
The Erasmus Program is a comprehensive funding program of the European Union and the largest mobility program at TU Dortmund University. It enables students to spend a semester abroad at a university with which their respective department has signed an agreement. The Institute of Music and Musicology currently has agreements with three universities in other European countries: the University of Paris-Sorbonne, the University of Bologna, and the University of Ankara.
Stays of up to two semesters are eligible for funding. Participants are exempt from tuition fees at the host university, and coursework completed abroad can be credited toward their degree program. In addition, students receive a mobility grant, the amount of which depends on the destination country. Special grants, for example for students with chronic illnesses or for traveling with children, are available. Scholarships in the home country or financial aid, such as BAföG, can generally continue to be received concurrently.
The deadline for applying for an ERASMUS study abroad program is March 1 of each calendar year for the following academic year.
Support from the Institute and the Office of International Affairs
Our Erasmus students are supported during their stay abroad by the relevant faculty members at the institute as well as by the International Office at TU Dortmund University. The office serves as the point of contact for mobility grants and provides a checklist for study abroad stays. Interested students can find comprehensive information about the Erasmus program on the office’s website and attend the information sessions offered there.
The Erasmus Coordination Office at the Institute of Music and Musicology is responsible for selecting and nominating applicants and assists students with the academic planning of their semester abroad.
Interested students should first schedule a consultation with the ERASMUS coordinator, Dr. Jan Duve, to learn about eligibility requirements and partner universities (erasmus.musik.fk16@tu-dortmund.de). Once the desired time period and partner university have been selected, students apply for a spot in the exchange program via email. The application deadline is March 1 for the upcoming academic year (i.e., the following summer and winter semesters). Once the selection process is complete, students will be contacted and will receive an offer of admission or, if there are more applicants than available spots, a request for additional documents or an invitation to an interview. Selection is then made by a committee from the institute. If the selected students accept the spot, they will be nominated to the host university and can apply there. An online acceptance form must also be submitted to the International Office by the end of May.

The International Office coordinates the interdisciplinary overseas exchange program, in which approximately 200 universities worldwide participate. Please note, however, that the application deadline is different. In addition, internships, theses, and even short-term programs abroad are possible.
